“FREE TRADE” 1987 (A Canadian ‘Odalisque’ in the American Bed)  figure 97 cm long— clay; flags. Juried into the 3rd National Biennial Exhibition of Ceramics, 1988, Trois Rivières, PQ (inspired by the 1814 painting by J. A. D. Ingres).     Private collection.

My first experience with clay was through throwing on the wheel. I was fascinated by the magical ease with which a lump of clay could be formed into a cup, bowl, vase – or just about anything else.

So my first ceramic sculptural efforts were made with thrown elements, altered and/or joined together. Eventually I tried other techniques – hand-building, casting, etc.

Clay is a wonderful sculptural material. It can assume the look and feel of many other materials, or it can be it’s own earthy self. I experimented and played, made abstract, figurative and everything in between.

This module is a compendium of the results of that investigation of clay as a sculptural medium.
