In 1996, Culinary Team Alberta were looking for a unique way to display their wonderful creations at that year’s World Culinary Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

They decided to commission work with a ‘western Canadian theme’ – plates, platters, sauce boats, decorative pieces, etc., from me, glass artist Martha Henry (not the actress) and silversmith Karen Cantine. The team won several gold medals in the competition.

In place of payment for our work, we three artists were invited to fly with the culinary team to Berlin, stay in their hotel and eat with them gourmet food specially prepared by their own chef. My wife, Sherran, flew in separately to join us and we had a great time exploring some of Berlin’s many museums, historic sites and art galleries.
